1. A client that you have been working with for just under a month admits that there is nothing wrong with smoking around his/her children. The client tells you that it was common when he/she was growing up and that no one in the family ever complained of breathing problems. During the session, one of his/her children begins to cough repeatedly. How might you respond? What advice, if any, might you give your client?
2. One of your long-time clients has been referred to you after using both street drugs and legal drugs together. When you confront the client about the health risks, the client is defiant, stating you couldn’t possibly understand their cultural background or the things they have to endure. During the course of the session you learn that the client is diabetic and has early stages of emphysema. What advice might you offer? What strategies might you use to successfully converse with the client?
3. After coming home from work you notice two of your neighbor’s children in the front yard: the 15-yr old is in the rocking chair with an open can of beer. The 6-yr old sister is sitting quietly on the porch steps, while three of the older childs friends are on the opposite side of the porch laughing aloud. As you walk up the driveway and head to your porch, you smell marijuana. When you ask the 15-yr old about the get together, he responds with the comments that they are just hanging out, and that he sees his parents do the same thing all the time all the time. How might you react? What steps might you take in this situation?
4. In your opinion, is there a relationship between being a victim of discrimination and substance abuse? Explain your answer.
5. All of your neighbor’s children are in their late teens inform you they will be attending a night club to celebrate a friends graduation. All three of them seem very excited, as they actually saved their money to attend the event. What advice might you give them, in terms of safety?
